After calling several hotels, we realized that the room rates quoted for blocks were more expensive than the rates we found on the Internet. Here are some hotels in the area and we recommend using an Internet site like Expedia, Orbitz, Travelocity to find a deal. The prices listed are the quotes we got over the phone, but we found better prices online.
Also, we've had very good experiences in the past with the hotel ratings found on TripAdvisor. Here is their San Diego page.
All these hotels are in within easy driving distance of Pacific Beach, the neighborhood where the reception will be (and where Elinor grew up).

According to reviews on Tripadvisor.com: This is a clean place, but
staff is minimal and rooms are tiny. It's in the middle of
Little Italy (a nice
neighborhood to wander around and about 20 minutes to Pacific Beach
or Pt. Loma), thus a good spot in central San Diego for going to
various touristy things like the zoo, the Gaslamp District,
Old Town, etc. and it's less than $100/night. The reviews suggest
asking for a courtyard room because they're much quieter.
